Nexium is a brand of Prilosec, a medication that contains the active ingredient esomeprazole. Nexium is used to treat symptoms of heartburn and acid reflux (heartburn) such as heartburn and heartburn symptoms. Nexium is available in a blister pack that you place inside the blister pack, which will protect you from light and moisture. If you find that the blister pack is too tight, you can use a light protective layer and seal it with a bandage to keep it from breaking. Do not use Nexium, if you have any allergies or are pregnant or breastfeeding. Do not use if you are taking the following medicines, including medicines called proton pump inhibitors (PPIs), to prevent stomach ulcers:

  • Rabeprazole (omeprazole)
  • Prevacid (omeprazole)

Nexium works by blocking the enzymes in the stomach lining (acidophilus), which are responsible for making stomach acid. Once in the stomach, the acid from Nexium can travel to the esophagus (food pipe), causing damage to the lining of the stomach. Nexium can cause a heartburn that is painful and lasts for up to 14 days after a meal. However, the symptoms of heartburn are not permanent. In rare cases, Nexium can cause a serious condition called gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). This is a condition where acid in the stomach can cause ulcers in the esophagus and cause heartburn. Nexium can also lead to other problems, including heart attack and stroke, which can cause your heart to stop working properly. Tell your doctor if you have any of the following medical conditions:

  • Liver disease
  • Kidney disease
  • Kidney stones
  • Blood disease
  • Lupus
  • Seizures
  • Stomach ulcers
